After four years away earning her veterinary degree at Western University of Health Sciences, she\u2019s returned home, and is now seeing patients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Originally from the Bay Area, Susan\u2019s family roots run deep in Hawai\u2018i. After college, she moved to Kaua\u2018i and co-founded an English riding business with her sister, Jessica. That experience quickly highlighted a critical gap in veterinary care on the island, especially for large animals, which inspired the sisters to create KNSAC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the clinic has evolved to focus on small animal medicine\u2014or rather, anything small enough to fit through the clinic doors\u2014you\u2019ll still occasionally find a goat or chicken on the schedule. Itchy skin. And right behind that? Itchy ears. In fact, the two often go hand in hand \u2014 when a pet\u2019s skin is struggling, the ears usually aren\u2019t far behind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">First Line of Defense: Flea Prevention (The Real Stuff)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If your pet is scratching, licking, losing hair, or shaking their head, the first thing we look at is flea control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even if you swear you\u2019ve never seen a flea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even if your pet \u201cnever leaves the house.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s the deal:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Fleas don\u2019t respect property lines or front doors.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>One flea bite can trigger major itching.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Not all flea products work \u2014 especially on Kaua\u2018i.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Our island fleas have gotten tough. Over-the-counter products like Frontline and Advantage often don\u2019t cut it anymore. It\u2019s like showing up to a knife fight with a pool noodle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We recommend long-acting, prescription flea preventatives that actually work. It\u2019s cheaper \u2014 and way less frustrating \u2014 than battling skin infections later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">If It\u2019s More Than Just Fleas&#8230;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes the itch isn\u2019t just fleas. Scratching can lead to irritated, infected skin \u2014 or ears \u2014 which means your pet might need a little extra help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s where skin and ear cytology comes in. It sounds fancy, but all we\u2019re doing is looking under the microscope to see what\u2019s going on \u2014 bacteria? Yeast? Tiny jungle creatures? (Kidding&#8230; it\u2019s usually yeast or bacteria.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Treatment might include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Prescription shampoos or sprays<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Medicated ear cleansers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Antibiotics<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Allergy Factor<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Many pets here also deal with environmental allergies \u2014 pollen, dust mites, mold spores \u2014 all made worse by humidity. Add fleas into the mix and it\u2019s no wonder we see so many itchy, uncomfortable pets this time of year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Allergies can show up as irritated skin, constant scratching, or recurring ear infections. If your pet is shaking their head, scratching at their ears, or they have that lovely \u201cyeasty\u201d smell \u2014 it\u2019s time for a visit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We also see food allergies and the occasional contact allergy, but fleas and environment are the biggest troublemakers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For pets struggling with allergies, we often use prescription anti-itch medications like Cytopoint\u00ae or Apoquel\u00ae to help manage symptoms and keep them comfortable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Early Action is Key<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The longer you wait, the itchier your pet gets \u2014 and the more complicated (and expensive) treatment can become.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Step one: excellent flea prevention.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Step two: a game plan based on what\u2019s really going on.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Questions?
